To advance its educational mission, Carnegie Mellon University is committed to creating and maintaining a learning and work environment that fosters creativity, growth, emotional and physical wellbeing and the pursuit of scientific, academic and artistic excellence. The willingness and ability of individuals in this community to form close, professional relationships is critical to the success of this commitment.
They also encourage the reasonable perception of placing others who do not engage in similar intimate relations at a disadvantage or the reasonable perception that the University condones the unfair and potentially exploitative exercise of professional authority and institutional influence. The validity of consent depends on, among other things, it being voluntary free from manipulation, coercion, or undue influence.

Abstract : Information systems IS pedagogy research supports the use of collaborative learning strategies that are based on the belief that learning increases when students work together to solve problems and develop cooperative learning skills. In this paper, we present an empirical comparison of two classroom design approaches – a ‘speed dating‘ method and a traditional presentation format. We collected and analysed data from student questionnaire-based surveys and in-class researcher observations of student engagement in an undergraduate senior capstone course entitled, ‘Innovation in Information Systems’.
Our results show increases in student engagement reported and observed and improvements in student-driven feedback given and received during the speed dating sessions as compared to the presentation sessions. We believe these findings demonstrate that the speed dating method is an effective alternative to a presentation format and is a useful complement to other collaborative learning methodologies.

P icky prowlers for romance can pluck from a limited pool of prospects using The League dating app. Its aim is to bring together power couples. CEO Amanda Bradford, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, launched the app earlier this year to connect hopeful lovers with common goals in cities nationwide. The app accepts only people whose social-media presence, particularly on LinkedIn, proves up-to-snuff career-wise — a weeding-out process that Bradford compares to colleges or workplaces.
Background: Sexually transmitted infection STI rates are on the rise among adolescents and young adults in the United States. With the popularity of online dating, adolescents and young adults must increasingly rely on limited cues to make initial judgments about potential sexual partners, including judgments about STI risk. Objective: This study aimed to assess whether in the context of online dating, an attractiveness heuristic would be used for STI risk assessment.
We hypothesized that consistent with research on halo effects, decision makers would judge more attractive people to be less likely to have STIs. Methods: In a survey experiment, we asked participants to determine which individual in each of 20 sets of paired photographs was enrolled in a personals website for people with publicly disclosed STIs. Results: Despite financial incentives for accuracy and high levels of self-confidence in their judgments, participants performed no better than chance at identifying individuals with self-reported STIs.
Contrary to our hypothesis, however, more attractive people were judged as being more likely to have an STI. This relationship appears to be mediated by inferences regarding the target individual’s sexual behavior, with more attractive individuals considered to have more partners. Conclusions: On showing adolescents and young adults photographs offering no diagnostic information about STIs, they appeared to use attractiveness as a cue for sexual risk, which was mediated by the belief that attractive individuals have more sexual opportunities.
Health care providers may wish to address this heuristic process among their adolescent patients in discussions about sexual health. Keywords: adolescents; attractiveness; dating apps; halo effect; heuristics; online dating; risk perception; sexual health; sexually transmitted infections.

As part of our broader initiative on promoting the education in the field of IVA control mechanisms at high schools and universities, we have created a micro-game Cinema Date, which introduces students challenges posed by controlling 3D virtual characters and expressing their emotional state. The game features two virtual teenagers dating on their way to the cinema.
The player can influence the course of the date by influencing behavior of the boy. Existing IVA architectures did not satisfy our requirements on the architecture being reasonably simple, yet capturing affect-modulated behavior, transition behavior and future-directed intentions.

In spring I am on sabbatical at Carnegie Mellon University, where I was a faculty member until I work on a broad and dynamic set of problems related to AI, algorithms, economics, and society. I am especially excited about projects that involve both interesting theory and direct applications; examples include the websites Spliddit and RoboVote , and ongoing collaborations with nonprofit organizations such as Refugees.
I am currently serving as program co-chair of EC I will present the ‘virtual democracy’ framework for the design of ethical AI. In a nutshell, the framework consists of three steps: first, collect preferences from voters on example dilemmas; second, learn models of their preferences, which generalize to any previously unseen dilemma; and third, at runtime, predict the voters’ preferences on the current dilemma, and aggregate these virtual ‘votes’ using a voting rule to reach a decision. I will focus on two instantiations of this approach: a proof-of concept system that decides ethical dilemmas potentially faced by autonomous vehicles, and a decision support tool designed to help a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit allocate food donations to recipient organizations.
These projects bridge AI, social choice theory, statistics, and human-computer interaction; I will discuss challenges in all of these areas. Computational social choice deals with algorithms for aggregating individual preferences or opinions towards collective decisions. AI researchers including myself have long argued that such algorithms could play a crucial role in the design and implementation of multiagent systems.
However, in the last few years I have come to realize that the “killer app” of computational social choice is helping people — not software agents — make joint decisions. I will illustrate this theme through two recent endeavors: Spliddit. Throughout the talk, I will devote special attention to the theoretical foundations and results that make these services possible. Technological advances have changed every aspect of our lives in recent decades, yet, for the most part, the same systems of democratic decision making have been in place for centuries.
