As a teenager, Tamara, a blue-eyed, blond white Cuban woman, dated a classmate, Alberto, a dark-skinned black man. It was the first time we were out together— like presenting our relationship to society—and that comment really had an impact on me. I felt ashamed because I thought of what Alberto must have felt. I never asked him about that insulting incident. We never talked about it. Their marriage was one of the first interracial.

Superficially, professionalism connotes authority, expertise, and status. Professionalization for teachers never unfolded this way; rather, it was a policy process fueled by blame where others identified teachers’ shortcomings. Policymakers, school leaders, and others understood professionalization measures for teachers as efficient ways to bolster the growing bureaucratic order of the public schools through regulation and standardization.
Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century with the rise of municipal public school systems and reaching into the s, Blaming Teachers traces the history of professionalization policies and the discourses of blame that sustained them.

The Rutgers University student charged in connection with an alleged murder plot had threatened to kill the parents of his ex-girlfriend after their recent breakup, sources familiar with the investigation told News 4 Wednesday. Izaia Bullock, a year-old junior from Piscataway who plays linebacker on the college’s football team, allegedly was angry at his ex-girlfriend’s parents over the breakup, which sources say happened because they disapproved of the interracial relationship between their daughter and the football player.
Bullock was so upset that he went to school counseling; he remained upset and expressed that to a teammate who told a team coach, the sources say. The coach passed on the information and protocol moved it up the chain to an investigation by university police. Prosecutors officially charged Bullock with two counts of attempted murder and conspiracy.
It wasn’t clear when the breakup happened in relationship to the alleged threats, nor how long Bullock may have been grappling with the issue. A university representative said Bullock had been dismissed from the football team and the university initiated disciplinary proceedings. Bullock was being held at the county prison pending an initial court appearance in New Brunswick; a listed number for him couldn’t be found Tuesday and attorney information for him wasn’t immediately clear.
His mother had been serving on a jury this week in New Brunswick and, after her son’s arrest, asked the judge to dismiss her so she could deal with the situation. The judge agreed, though the mother could not immediately be reached for comment on her son’s arrest. Skip to content. New Jersey.

Hours after dropping this episode, we learned of allegations of misconduct against Professor Jim Pfaus that were published by the CBC just before our story aired. We have since done additional reporting on his work and have not encountered objections to the quality of his research. We have chosen to leave our published podcast unchanged, but we have used this opportunity to interview other researchers in the field of sexual preferences and decided to feature one of them in the subsequent broadcast excerpt that aired on Morning Edition.
If you’re looking for a deeper dive into the science of sexual preferences, racial preference hierarchies and their impact, or the history and politics of Asian-American sexuality, here are some of the academic resources we used to research this episode. Conditioned partner preference in male and female rats for a somatosensory cue. Is love color-blind, or at least becoming increasingly so? But is it the idea of racially mixed relationships that we are growing to accept or is it the reality? What is the actual experience of individuals in these partnerships as they navigate their way through public spheres and intermingle in small, close-knit communities? In Navigating Interracial Borders, Erica Chito Childs explores the social worlds of black-white interracial couples and examines the ways that collective attitudes shape private relationships.
Drawing on personal accounts, in-depth interviews, focus group responses, and cultural analysis of media sources, she provides compelling evidence that sizable opposition still exists toward black-white unions. Disapproval is merely being expressed in more subtle, color-blind terms. Even college students, who are heralded as racially tolerant and open-minded, do not view interracial couples as acceptable when those partnerships move beyond the point of casual dating.
Popular films, Internet images, and pornography also continue to reinforce the idea that sexual relations between blacks and whites are deviant.

When I was studying at Harvard in the early s, I had a black immigrant professor who had built part of his career gas-lighting anti-black discrimination in favor of s-style black cultural inferiority tropes. He cited statistics saying that black women did not perform oral sex as often as white women, making them less desirable sexual partners. Sexual incompatibility on this sex act was part of the motor driving black men to date interracially more than black women.
I was struck by how he ignored scholarship showing how white women are lauded as the essence of beauty, domesticity, and ideal womanhood.

By Tom McLaughlin. The book looks at the experiences of black and white interracial couples in two settings — Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro — according to the various race-gender combinations of the couples. According to Osuji, looking at interracial couples in Brazil — a country historically known for its racial diversity — shows how racism can coexist with race mixture. From to , the Rutgers—Camden researcher conducted more than in-depth interviews with spouses in order to determine the meanings that they give to race and ethnicity in these two contexts.
Just as importantly, Osuji sought to shed light on what is understood about race itself in these two societies. Throughout her book, Osuji uses her findings to challenge the notion that society should rely on interracial couples and their multiracial children to end racism.

Two students there had founded the group called Colors the previous fall, and Ms. Schultheiss, a native of Franklin, N. Schultheiss decided that Rutgers needed a similar program. I knew we needed it here. Schultheiss, a Mu Sigma Upsilon member majoring in biology and English, knocked on fraternity-house doors and approached anyone who she thought might be interested. Last weekend, 11 fraternities and sororities, often separated by cultural differences, banded together for a program of skits, talks and social gatherings intended to break down barriers of misunderstanding between them.
Participants in student-initiated lectures on racial sensitivity said the series helped expose and eliminate racial and cultural stereotypes by bringing them into the open. Colors began with a ”Meet the Greeks” night in which minority Greek organizations were paired with nonminority counterparts, with which they traditionally have had little, if any, interaction, to question each other about different practices and customs.
Most black and Hispanic fraternities and sororities operate under the auspices of the Minority Greek Council, a group formed in to address their cultural needs, while other fraternities have their own council. The organizations were again paired off during ”skit night” to dramatize common themes of misunderstanding, like interracial dating, pledging practices and sexism in fraternities.
The program concluded with a carnival for underprivleged children in the New Brunswick area. Fraternity members engaged about 20 local children in pie throwing, face painting and other activities in the Mettler Residence Hall. In an address on race relations at Colors lecture night, Francis L. Lawrence, the new president of Rutgers, said the Colors program was an essential act of definition for the Greek system.

Interracial unions refer to romantic relationships between people of different racial categories. Researchers employ both qualitative and quantitative methods to study interracial unions: a macro level perspective involves examining demographic data to identify cultural patterns, and a micro level approach focuses on the cultural meaning — derived from social interaction — of an inter racial relationship to the couple and to their family , friends, and community.
In recent years more attention has been devoted to the study of the identity of the offspring of interracial unions, but the study of interracial marriage remains sociologically relevant — the rate of interracial marriages can be an indicator of levels of proximity or distance across racial lines, tolerance or prejudice of different groups, and the malleability of the boundaries of racial categories.

Wright , Rutgers University. Historians have noted the role that Black students and Black Student Unions BSUs have had on the birth of Black and Ethnic Studies programs and departments at universities directly following the civil rights era. In recent years, geographers have turned their attention to the study of place names. In particularly, they have scrutinized the efforts made to name streets after prominent Black leaders, and more recently, student challenges towards the retitling of buildings and monuments named after confederates and other white supremacists.
Despite the fact that many of the loudest calls to rename buildings and remove monuments in honor the Confederacy were made by college students, and that there have been equal calls for spaces in service of Black and other students of color, there has been few attempts to understand the significance of buildings that affirm the presence and history of Black students at PWIs.
