In a blog post announcing the June launch date of Drupal 9 , Drupal founder and project lead, Dries Buytaert , revealed the latest roadmap for Drupal version support. The announcement marks an exciting milestone for the Drupal community but also starts the countdown to the end of life date for not one, but two, major versions of Drupal. With the support cycles for both Drupal 7 and 8 coming to an end in , now is the time for Drupal site owners to consider what an upgrade or migration might look like for them , and to better understand the impact of these dates on the future of Drupal. When a piece of software reaches its end of life date, it will no longer receive bug fixes or security updates from the maintainers. Dropping support for deprecated versions of Drupal is a way for maintainers to drive adoption toward modern platforms that leverage current technology as effectively as possible. Come November , both Drupal 7 and 8 will reach end of life, but each for slightly different reasons. In November , Drupal 7 will be over 10 years old.
Handling Date and Time in Drupal 7
Drupal 9 is here! Learn more in our Guide to Drupal 9. This collection covers a topic in Drupal 7 which may or may not be the version you’re using. We’re keeping this tutorial online as a courtesy to users of Drupal 7, but we consider it archived. Learning “Dates” in Drupal can help you create event functionality, listing pages with a unique result set, and calendars.
If your site is one of those , still on Drupal 7, should you upgrade the time it takes to keep a Drupal 7 version of their code up to date.
Earlier today June 24th, , Drupal. This does not affect the Drupal 8 end of life date. Per Drupal. This extended life line means more work will be required from the Drupal community and other maintainers of this version of the CMS. This means that if you’re managing a website using this version of Drupal you’re getting more time before site security becomes a pressing issue while budgets recover thanks to the community support.
You can continue running your site and receive the security updates as normal.

For more details on this, please see our updates in our post, Extending Drupal 7’s End of Life: What’s a nonprofit to do now? An Update. Drupal 9 is now scheduled to be released in , giving people a year to upgrade from version 8 to version 9, before Drupal 8’s EOL.
I am almost always an optimist about the future, and Drupal 8 promised and usually delivered on many things:. But one thing that has always been annoying, and now is probably to the state of alarming, for some, is the fact that Drupal 8 adoption has still not hit a level of growth which will put it ahead of Drupal 7 adoption any time soon. This fact has been beaten to death, so you can read more about that elsewhere , or see the current usage graph here and yes, not every site reports back to Drupal.
And the main driver for this post, in particular, was the following tweet by webchick Angie Byron , who coincidentally is probably the main reason I dove headfirst into the Drupal community many years ago after she mentored me through my first core patch hi Angie! Time for my semi-annual pre- DrupalCon informal poll: If you’re still on Drupal 7 and haven’t moved to 8 yet, what’s holding you back?
Please RT. I won’t answer all the questions above—there are a lot of nuances to each that I could not possibly answer in a blog post—but I do want to jot down a number of areas where I have seen pain and usually experienced on my own and which are still holding back widespread adoption of Drupal 8 by those who used to default to Drupal for ‘all the things’.
Caveat to those who read on—you may think I’m trying to disparage Drupal through the rest of this post. I’m not. I’m exposing the dark side of a major open source project’s decision to radically re-architect it’s core software on an entirely new foundation. It’s helpful to know these things so we can figure out ways to avoid hitting all the same pain points in the future, and also as a sort of ‘call to action’ in case anyone reading this thinks they can push some initiative forward in one area or another it’s no coincidence I’m finishing this post on the flight to DrupalCon Seattle!
I don’t buy that argument, because otherwise we’d see similar attrition in pretty much all the other PHP CMS communities

In this post, you will learn how to create a custom date format for Drupal 7. A field format is a functionality or a feature which allows to configure the display of a field for a presentation mode default, summary, etc. When some fields are provided to add to the content types from the Drupal core or from a contributed module, these ones usually display some generic presentation formats that although they are the most used, they do not always fit the display that we need for our projects.
As an example, we will use a date field provided by the Date module which it is in the Basic Page content. As we can observe in the following image, in the configuration of the presentation for the content type for the default presentation mode, the Date field offers three possible display formats which are configurable plus one format to be hidden. The first one would show the date and time, the second one shows the time passed from that date up to the present time and the third one would show the date in a plan text.
Well, to create our personalized custom format, the following steps are as follows: Step 1: In the module file of the custom module where we would like to add the functionality, we will add the following code. It is in this function where the format logic is implemented. Contact us. Related Post. Read article.

Drupal 7 is still the most widely used version of Drupal on the internet today. It’s clear that there are a large number of websites that will need to be migrated to ensure that they are secure, robust, and using the latest technology. Due to the sheer number of sites on Drupal 7, the community is taking more time phasing out support, giving owners ample time to migrate. Drupal is adopting the same release cycle as Symphony , the primary underlying software that Drupal 8 runs on.
This will allow the next version of Drupal, Drupal 9, to be built on the newest version of Symphony. In this way, Drupal will stay on top of emerging trends, boost security, and increase performance as it evolves. One of the key advantages is that the upgrade path between Drupal 8 and 9 has much less friction. Drupal 9 will be released on June 3rd, , a little over a year before the end of life for Drupal 7 and 8.
This gives the community and developers plenty of time to work out the kinks and get a more stable and solid CMS ready for our clients. So when Drupal 8 ends, we can be confident in moving it to version 9. Support ends for Drupal 7 in November of so there is still time to invest in moving your sites over to Drupal 8.
Since the underlying framework radically changed between 7 and 8, we usually recommend a redesign, since this allows us to add features such as greater usability, compliance, faster search, and improved security.
How to know if your Drupal site has been hacked by Drupalgeddon 2 (CVE-2018-7600)
Monday, 8 April, Drupal CMS is often the first choice for developing large scale websites and web applications. It is powerful and reliable. There is no doubt about that. Yet, talking about migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 is a topic that requires further discussion.
The CCK Fields API is in Drupal core in Drupal 7. Views: facilitates the retrieval and presentation, through a database abstraction system, of content to site visitors.
Over the years of maintaining Drupal websites I noticed that a lot of developers — and themers — hard code date and time formats. I know this may sound like a rant, but I would like to demonstrate an easier and cleaner way of creating and managing date and time formats. For this example enter in “d-m-Y”. Now that our format has been created, go back to the types page and click on “Add date type”. Enter in “Blog Created Short” as the “Date type” and select the format that you want to use.
You can also reuse the type within Views. Ivan is the founder of WebWash and spends most of his time consulting and writing about Drupal. How To Create a Custom Format for a Date Field
Recently, there has been a lot of buzz in the Drupal community about Drupal 9. The plans for launching Drupal 9 as well as for supporting Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 have come into focus. With every release of a new major version of Drupal, there is anxiety about how challenging the upgrading process will be. With Drupal 9, there is no reason to be anxious. In the past, each new major version of Drupal was seen as a break from the last major version.
The Drupal community did not guarantee compatibility between the new major version and the old major versions.
I was wondering if Drupal is the right choice to build seo friendly dating sites. Can someone give us some clues and examples?
There are two things you should be aware of:. The Drupal Association will no longer provide security releases for Drupal 7, no further development on the core framework will be done and development on the Drupal 7 version of most contributed modules will stop. Security, flexibility and scalability are often reasons why Drupal was chosen for a project and this clearly has an impact. A number of partners will be selected to provide paid security support for several years and there will always be members of the community who are prepared to do some work on unsupported contributed modules.
Upgrading your site from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 means that you have to also migrate all content that is present in your site. The theme that is used to display the content on the site will also have to be re-developed. The massive structural changes of the inner workings of Drupal are the cause of this, highly inconvenient but certainly necessary to keep Drupal the modern framework we all need it to be.
Performing a migration and re-developing the theme mean that this needs to be discussed and planned well in advance. Depending on the size of your site the time needed may vary, but to wait until the EOL date arrives is obviously not a good idea. The sensible thing to do is to start thinking about what steps are necessary to perform an upgrade to Drupal 8.
Should You Upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9?
Here is the bad news: If you didn’t update your site to the latest Drupal 7 or 8 releases before April 11, , chances are your site and the server it sits on are now being compromised. And the longer your site goes without this updating, the higher the likelihood it’s being used for cryptocurrency mining or worse. What makes this situation difficult for site owners is that you need to have some technical knowledge to determine whether your site and server have been hacked.
Rather, the servers they sit on are being hacked to mine a cryptocurrency called Monero. In the process, hackers are creating a backdoor on these servers that allow them to come back at any time.
On Drupal 7 sites with the update status module, Drupal Core will show until you decide I need to upgrade closer to the Drupal 7’s EOL date?
Last month, two major Drupal news items dropped. In light of these developments, you may want to rethink plans for upgrading to Drupal 8. Should you now migrate from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9? First of all, an expected milestone: Drupal 9 has been officially released. Second, an unexpected public service announcement , but good news all the same. Drupal 7 end of life will be extended to late fall of The Drupal Security Team will continue to follow the Security Team processes for Drupal 7 core and contributed projects.
For those of you that have begun mapping your transition, you should ignore this end of life extension. Drupal 7 is still coming to an end, and the future lives in Drupal 9. If anything, you might want to get a bit more ambitious in your planning for a redesign in conjunction with the move to a new version. With more months to work with, that can make a lot of financial sense.
